*RULES OF MIXED MARTIAL ARTS - MMA*

A mixed marital art is a typical fight sport, which uses varied fight methods, such as wrestling and striking. Modern MMA games are very famous. Marital arts is also known as 'cage fighting' in the United States due to its association with octagonal cage fighting, UFC. The MMA promotions in Canada, U.K and U.S refer to 'cage' due to their involvement with UFC events. This type of combat tournament was introduced in 1993. The first one was, 'Ultimate Fighting Championship'. The rules were bare minimum for mimicking the effectiveness of the game. Towards late 1990s, more rules and regulations were implemented for safety and security of the fighters. MMA has seen massive growth thereon.

The Unified Rules pertaining to MMA were set by State Athletic Commission of New Jersey. To form uniform rules all over U.S, large number of sate commissions have incorporated rules for MMA. For a fighting event in any state, it must adhere to rules of the State Athletic Commission. Hawaii is the only place where Unified rules are not compulsory in mixed marital arts. Indian cities are also excluded from the state commission's jurisdiction. Some of the rules are as follows-

· Round Rules-Every single round has duration of five minutes excluding a rest period of one minute between the rounds. Main title tournament matches have five rounds and non-title game has only three rounds.

· Dress Code-Fighters have to battle in shorts, which is permitted or accepted by the judges. No shoes, footers, shirts, or lengthy pants are allowed. Even hand gloves should be light and permitted.

· Judging Methods-There is 10-point system, which is effective for all matches. There are basically three judges to keep count of each round, every round winner gets 10points and the loser gets lesser points. If the round is a draw then both the competitors receive equal points. In the state of New Jersey, the minimum scoring points a fighter receives is seven.

· Techniques Used-Striking the elbow or elbow striking is permitted by the Unified Rules, with exception for those striking the opponent with elbow point.

The weight classes classified under the Unified Rules are as follows:

There are 9 weight classes in MMA as permissible limits under Nevada State Athletic Commission. Fighters are usually weighed in lbs.
